Keeping New Yorkers SAFE

To many, New York is the greatest city in the world. People love to visit New York, and tourism brought in $31 billion in 2010. These visitors are often well informed about safety in New York and usually have a great time with no incidents. But what about those of us who live and work here?

For residents and frequent visitors, safety in New York is often less about crime – the big concern of many visitors – and more about accidents. Like any other city in the United States, New York has a robust public safety infrastructure consisting of police, fire and ambulance services and other agencies that work to reduce the consequences when problems do occur.

Not Just Responding to Accidents, But Working to Prevent Them

In addition to responding agencies, there are many local organizations and national agencies that help New Yorkers stay safe, wherever they are. In high-rise buildings, at work, in the supermarket, in an elevator or at the park, both public and private groups work to keep people free from injury and illness.

Although New York is like any other American city in many ways, it is also different because of the dense population and the many visitors. Tourists, while always welcome, constitute a challenge for safety agencies. People who are unfamiliar with where they are and uncertain about how to get around are more vulnerable to accidents. Similarly, even native New Yorkers who are distracted by cellphones, pets on leashes and the ever-changing parade of interesting people can also lose focus and become susceptible to accidents and injuries. Despite everyone’s best intentions, accidents do happen.
